"Never, never, never give up." -Winston Churchill

Biology is a challenging subject.  And as with many challenges, temporary setbacks can occur.  The key here is how do you handle the challenge and push on?

Strategies that Lead to Success

1.  Do your homework

It is assigned to you for a reason!  It is, in all essence, your training.  You wouldn't expect to do well in a basketball game if you never practiced, would you?  Homework also can buffer your grade if you experience a poor test or quiz grade.

2. Go to tutorials

Fact: Teachers are happy to see their students show up for tutorials.  It shows that the student is trying and wants to succeed.  And teachers know the statistic that students who show up for tutorials usually perform better on quizzes and exams.  Attend tutorials for material you do not understand and be prepared to ask questions!

3. The Power of a Positive Attitude

Between your ears is the most powerful machine you will ever own.  You train your brain at school to think and reason.  You also, by every action and word, tell yourself what you can and cannot do.  Never underestimate a positive attitude as it will dictate how you handle setbacks and how likely you are to succeed in the end.

4. Actively Participate

My classroom integrates Promethian ActivBoard Technology which allows full student participation in lessons.  But it cannot force it.  Sitting in class unengaged while a teacher instructs is a useless waste of time for you and of course, you will not learn anything this way.  You MUST participate.  Ask QUESTIONS.  Get CURIOUS.  Biology is AMAZING if you only let yourself appreciate it.

5.  Learn how to study

The students who make the highest grades on the exams do not possess any greater amount of intelligence than you.  They have simply mastered how to study and they do it often.  Learning how to focus on the correct things, manage your time efficiently, and motivate yourself are all part of having excellent study skills.  There are some great resources on studying efficiently, and here is one of my favorites: http://www.how-to-study.com/

"Our attitudes control our lives. Attitudes are a secret power working twenty-four hours a day, for good or bad. It is of paramount importance that we know how to harness and control this great force."    -Tom Blandi
